With increasing need for a safer online presence and cyber security issues, social platforms are now tasked with the responsibility of upgrading their mediums for the safety of their users. Instagram has outlined new security features that will allow its users flag misinformation, thereby stopping the spread of false information.
Instagram Chief Adam Mosseri in his words on Twitter said “I’m proud that, starting today, people can let us know if they see posts on Instagram they believe may be false, there’s still more to do to stop the spread of misinformation, more to come”.
The new feature is said to be officially released by the end of August.

The Facebook owned company said that users will now be able to report misinformation by clicking the three dots in the upper right corner of every post, and by touching buttons to mark such post as “inappropriate” and then as “false information.”
Such marked posts will now be reviewed by the company’s panel. The company has also said it would not remove false information, but marked posts won’t be displayed on the platform’s search, hashtag or explore pages.
This new feature goes to augment the steps made by Instagram to use image detection to find content that was already flagged and debunked on Facebook.
However, unlike Facebook which sends users a notice when they attempt to share content deemed fake in an attempt to dissuade them from doing so, users on Instagram who interact with a post containing false information won’t be notified by the platform.

The company in an announcement also said it hopes to use this feature to train their Artificial Intelligence System so as to help proactively find and flag misinformation on the platform without the need for a report.
